The Scientific Definition of Hurricanes - 1293 Words

When hurricane Sandy embarked on its destructive journey to the Eastern Coast of the United States in October of 2012 meteorologists already knew the storm would be unparalleled in terms of its probable level of damage and deaths. After the horror which was Hurricane Katrina the population was well aware of the sheer power a hurricane could produce. Known in different parts of the world as typhoons and tropical cyclones, the entire world knows the destructive possibilities that a hurricane brings with it. The scientific definition of a hurricane is â€Å"an intense storm of tropical origin, with sustained winds exceeding 64 knots, which forms over the warm northern Atlantic and eastern North Pacific oceans† (Ahrens 316). Each year, from approximately June 1st to November 30th, the world is forced to suffer through hurricane season. Through the duration of this time period hundreds of storm systems emerge from the tropical regions which surround the equator. From these countles s storms over 50 will intensify to hurricane levels. Hurricanes require a certain atmosphere in order to form to the level which makes them disastrous. Most often they will form over tropical waters where the winds are light, there is high humidity and the surface temperature of the water is exceedingly warm, typically 80 ° F. Online Reservation in Airline Industry †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Online Reservation in Airline Industry. Answer: Introduction Internet has become an integral part of an organisational practice in nowadays. This is so because of several reasons such as the enhancement of customer interaction through the latest and most in use technology. An incrementing use of internet in customers especially in the teenagers and the business persons has produced ample of opportunities to the different industries across the globe to avail the created advantage (Westerlund, Leminen and Rajahonka 2014). On a same note, the different airline companies have now started using the internet to get the available benefits. Customers now can book their tickets on the e-commerce websites with ease. Not only this, they are also entitled to compare the best ticket prices offered by the different airline companies operating in the respective zone (Al-hawari and Mouakket 2012). However, this particular study analyses the factuality of the trend based on the selected articles. The selected article is on the application and the management of e-business model by the Kuwait Airways. The chosen article emphasises on the use of a trusted website. The system works through website plug-ins, which is installed in the travel agent web sites. The system in technology terms is known as Application Programming Interface (API). It acts like an interface to the customers and to the clients to help them avail their tickets (Granados, Gupta and Kauffman 2012). In the ancient time, the use of internet was known to be the asset of the tech savvy guys only. However, there has been a huge transformation since then. Interestingly, teenagers are highly addicted to the use of internet. Business persons are the next group that use internet more frequently. The rising use of internet has probably drawn the interest of airline companies towards the e-commerce platform. The use of e-commerce does not only mean to enhance the business but it also requires to be kept secured from hackers. It is therefore necessary to use a trusted website to reduce the risk to a possible extent (Garvey and Sankaranarayanan 2012). The API covers the following services: Flight status Search directions Flight schedules The new form of booking The article emphasize on the use of separate version of e-business for the clients and for the travel agents in order to ensure the principles of Kuwait Airways for B2B. The advent of e-business model has provided many challenges as well to the different airline companies. Consumer behaviour is the one challenge for its rapidly changing decisions. Online marketing, branding and customer relationship management are some factors that differentiate between the different brands (Shaw 2016). The Kuwait Airways need to stand solid in terms of all the mentioned issues to stay competitive. Evaluation of the article using other articles The article has supported the fact that the e-business model can increase the market shares and the customer loyalty if the airline company provides a website that has a flawless application programming interface (API) to fulfil the requirement of customers. The article has also sensed the urgency to be superior in many regards in order to be competitive and leading in the industry. Some of such factors are customer relationship management, online marketing, consumer behaviour and branding. The author has emphasised on the importance of consumer behaviour, which is one of those factors that defines the competition. The changing perception of customers can anytime hamper the business. They do so because the e-commerce platform offers them varied range of offers from ticket prices to the nature of the journey. They mean everything when they plan for a journey. This is where they unintentionally play with the different brands. In course of doing so, the different brand then suffer the c onsequences. Online marketing according to the author is the other potential factor that distinguish between the different brands operating in the airline industry. The company with better marketing strategy scores better in attracting new customers. The retention is the after process, which the particular company can attain by offering their customers the cheapest air ticket pricing and the other services. The other services include many such as retaining the customers in case of flight cancellation. The better the company has strategies for compensating the losses of flight cancellation the better will be the chances to score in competition. Flight cancellation is indeed very common during the winter times. The bad weather condition leaves the different airline industry with no counter option than just to retain their customers (Xiang, Magnini and Fesenmaier 2015). According to Moreno-Izquierdo, Ramn-Rodrguez and Ribes (2015), customer loyalty is never guaranteed with the use of internet in flight tickets booking. This is because the different airline companies use the power of monopoly to change the pricings at a real time close to the scheduled departure of the flight. Customers have then no option than to accept the pricing. The dominating companies take advantage of their reputation and raise the ticket pricing in real time. This means that the ticket booking on internet may attract the dissatisfaction of customers as it is explained in the above example (Zhang et al. 2014). The author has actually argued the fact given by Al-Fadly (2016) by stating that good website could also fail to provide the ultimate success to the airline companies across the globe. This is because the different airline companies use internet for showing off their monopoly to the customers. Such a monopoly will dissatisfy the customers and will eventually become the reason for losing out of a significant customer base. Additionally, the author has further said that there is a fight in between the different airline companies for offering the cheaper air prices. The low cost airline concept is at high boom. However, this also means that such flights will compromise on quality of service. Customers will not be able to get the free foods when they are into a long journey such as it is with the European low cost airlines. This is fulfilling their demands by saving their money on boarding; however, it is also encouraging them to be desirous for better offers. Such tendency of customers gives rise to several new and cheaper airline companies. Nevertheless, customers will definitely select the one that offers the cheapest air pricing. In doing such, it is never possible that they will remain loyal to one brand (David Mc A 2013). In the opinion of Byambaa and Chang (2012), internet has provided many options to the customers. It has provided to the customers the option to browse the different flights and make the payment by using the different available payment methods with ease. However, the payment mode is threatening as it is less secured. Nevertheless, an unsecured platform will lead to customer dissatisfaction as it is evident from the example of Mongolian Airlines (Niranjanamurthy et al. 2013). It has also differed from the beliefs of Al-Fadly (2016) by stating that even a good website cannot reduce the threats of making payments online. The author has not directly said anything about the business profits; however, it is a clear indication that the loyalty level will be at stake. Furthermore, this will challenge the retention of customers. Moreover, market shares might hamper because of an incrementing use of the e-business model. The author has not rejected the importance of internet; however, it has al so not supported the benefits in terms of market shares and the customer loyalty. They rather mean that market shares depend on different other variables such as an effective low cost carrier model, a quality legacy services, effective management of e-commerce website, flexibility with the frequent changing demands of customers and others like those (Hussain, Al Nasser and Hussain 2015). Application of the evaluation on the Omani market The evaluation of the entire selected article has helped to conclude few important points, which are necessary to consider for being competitive in the industry. Following are such points: Flexibility with the changing customers demands is a key to be competitive Payment security is necessary at the e-commerce platform to have a large number of loyal customers To use competitive marketing communication modes to be an efficient advertiser of innovative business strategies The Shaksy Group is an Oman based privately owned holding company. It has several businesses to its credits such as Oil Gas, Real Estate and Construction (Shaksy Group 2017). The real estate business of the company in specific needs the implementation of e-commerce service. Such business needs more and more online advertisement in order to attract the clients. Nevertheless, this can well be supplied to the target clients with the help of e-commerce website. This will be the platform where customers will be able to browse their choice of plots or properties. The point of evaluation would help the company in meeting with the demands of customers, educating its clients on the security related threat in the online payment and to be an effective marketing organisation. The oil gas business will also be requiring the implementation of e-commerce website. Such platform will help the company get connected to more new clients. Moreover, the company will be able to get the updates on the lat est news on the oil gas business. The construction work of the company will also be benefitted with the implementation of e-commerce platform. The e-commerce platform will help to contact various new clients. Moreover, this is a very good resource to get new businesses. Clients will be able to browse the bidding prices of the company. Henceforth, company will have a more defined connectivity with the more new clients. Omantel is the first company in Oman that has provided telecommunications facilities to the country. It is the major provider of internet service in Oman (Omantel.om 2017). The company would be benefitted by one of the facts, which have been evaluated above in the evaluation section. The fact that it is necessary to be flexible with the rapid changing perceptions of customers will be a key for the company to continue its dominance in the country and to also expand to the other parts of world. The company is operating in huge presence across the country and in some other parts of world. Additionally, effective marketing communication will be another key to advertise the new business concept in the local or in the global parts of world. The e-commerce platform will really provide benefits to the company. Omantel provides telecommunication services in Oman. Nevertheless, the company will be able to reach to a wider customer base, which is never possible physically. E-commerce has probab ly made the distant places look closer. It has brought the different worlds closer to one another at just one platform. Conclusion The Kuwait Airways needs to be flexible with the changing demands of customers. The e-commerce website is good for the enhancement of business revenues; however, it is unsafe as well for the payment. It is necessary for the company that it educates the customers for being safe while making payment online and also follow some safety rules to avoid any unwanted consequences. Kuwait Airways should take the leverage of the e-business model; however, it should also educate its customers on the negative consequences that might occur in case of ignoring the safety rules of e-commerce usage. The company needs to be flexible with the rapid changing perception of the customers. They need to be cost effective as well as quality oriented. They need to use a good website in order to soften the experience of both the customers and the clients. The e-commerce platform despite all the challenges such as security threats has won several accolades from every corner. It has not only benefitted the business but it has also benefitted the common people as well. It is the one single platform where the entire world can experience the whole lot of thing that had never been possible without the e-commerce platform. References Al-Fadly, A., 2016. Wassily Kandinsky Essay Example

Wassily Kandinsky Paper In the 19th Century, paintings were very structured. Artists painted what they saw. Knowing this is what the public expected, Wassily Kandinsky began his abstract painting in a way in which others could still distinguish features such as his most recurrent subjects such as mountains, villages, trees and churches. I feel Kandinsky was trying to fulfil what the public wanted rather than fulfil his own needs as an artist in the early years as a painter. In 1908 Kandinsky made the life changing decision to move to Marnau, where he concentrated on his painting. Here is where he explored the areas in painting which neither he or anyone else had ever touched upon. In Kandinskys earlier landscapes, although we do see a freer composition style, with passionate outbursts of colour I do not believe he had been painting in his true style. At this time, Kandinsky still favoured a more structured way of painting. But we do often, more regularly in his later paintings, see examples of shapes moving freely in space. Kandinskys colourful palette is based on the primaries, red, yellow and blue. Paintings such as Couple Riding in 1906. And Beach Baskets in 1905. Working alongside well known artists such as Cà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½zanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh. It is easy to look at Kandinskys progress towards abstraction by looking at his work between 1908 and 1912. Recognisable paintings turn into completely independent compositions. Mountains and trees become lines and curves. Animals and buildings become fantastic figures. Colour loses its illustrative function. As his forms and colour become more independent, the topic of painting becomes less important. In his autobiography, Kandinsky wrote, Several years where to go by before I reached the conviction this more by a process of reasoning than by any sentimental attachment that nature and art have different organic and historical ends, but that both are equally valid [] everything that was dead began to pulsate with life [] everything revealed itself, its very essence, its hidden soul, which was silent more often than not. Thus, each point at rest and each point in movement (which equals the line) came to life and opened up its soul. And this was enough to enable me to seize, with all my being, and all my senses, the potential and the existence of art, this art which there days, by contrast to what is called the figurative, is termed abstract. I believe Kandinsky comes into his own light in his First Abstract Watercolour, painted in 1910. From then on Wassily Kandinsky did not turn back. His paintings went from strength to strength. 1910 is the year where Kandinsky set out his new inventive principles. He believed that each colour has its own quality that gives its own impression. Yellow is warm and stimulating where as blue is severe and cold. Kandinsky also gave forms and interpretation. Yellow is associated with the acute angle and the triangle where as blue is associated with the obtuse angle and the circle. Making optical features filter through the observers emotions to become an elementary means of expression. It is safe to say that Kandinsky was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Without his revolutionary new style of painting a lot of artists of today would not exist. Kandinsky had the gift of synthaesthesia, this is when one of his senses is stimulated, and another reacted. For instance, he saw a colour when listening to a note on an instrument. With Kandinsky, colours and sounds appeal to different feeling. To Kandinsky colour not only has a temperature, yellow being warm, but it also has a meaning. Yellow is active and aggressive whilst blue is shy and passive. Yellow is hard and sharp and blue is soft and yielding. I myself have always associated certain things with certain colours, like numbers or words. The number four to me is red and the number one is white. Although it does not happen anywhere near to the extent as it does to Wassily Kandinsky, I can relate to his feeling and his paintings. Knowing these facts, I have learnt to appreciate Kandinskys works to the fullest. You can make your own mind up about his earliest works of which I am not a great fan of, especially after researching for this assignment. This is because I feel he was not painting in the style in which he craved for. It was not well known and I believe he thought the public would not have accepted his compositions. But by 1910, Kandinsky had learnt to express his own feelings into an art piece and discovered a world of his own. I am also particularly fond of Kandinsky, not just because of his excellent use of colour and space but for his great revolution in the art world. He changed the way people see art today, without him, a lot of artists would not painting the way they do, abstract expressionism has a lot to thank Wassily Kandinsky. Dying in Paris at the age of 78 in 1944, I believe he lived a full life achieving his full potential. Looking back over his paintings and the way his style changed over the years I can see that the last few years of his life is where his true form was revealed.

Sinewy and Sinuous

Sinewy and Sinuous Sinewy and Sinuous Sinewy and Sinuous By Maeve Maddox In the context of anatomy, a sinew is â€Å"a strong fibrous cord serving to connect a muscle with a bone or other part.† Figuratively, usually in the plural, sinew connotes strength, as in this much-repeated quotation from Cicero: The sinews of war  are infinite money. The adjective for sinew is sinewy. When I hear or read the word sinewy applied to a person, I think of muscles, strength, and healthy leanness. In the context of cooking, sinewy is applied to cuts of meat. Sinewy meat is usually tough. Used figuratively, sinewy connotes strength and masculinity. Here are examples of both literal and figurative uses of the adjective sinewy: The sinewy  horsemen, as daring as the Crusaders who invaded the Holy Land, seemed to be everywhere. At Bondoni was Percival, a tall,  sinewy  man, a fine rider and shot.   He had taken his coat off and had rolled up his shirtsleeves, revealing  sinewy white  arms covered in freckles. The shank comes from the upper leg portion of the cow. Since this is a very well exercised part of the body, the meat is lower in fat and tends to be sinewy and dry. Unlike beech, it has broad ridges that curve up and around the trunk and branches, resembling  a sinewy, muscular arm.   Jacques Barzun praised Stout for his â€Å"sinewy, pellucid, propelling prose,† which seems to me to get it exactly right. Because of these associations with sinewy, I was startled to find the label â€Å"Sinewy Delta† under the photo of a river delta in the Yukon. The photo showed a complex convergence of winding rivers that from the air resembled veins visible on the back of an old person’s hand or the diagram of a network of capillaries. As I explored the Web, I discovered that some people use sinewy instead of the more conventional adjective sinuous to describe things- usually rivers- that are characterized by curves, twists, and turns. Sinuous derives from the Latin noun sinus: a bending, a curve, a fold. I do not rule out the possibility that strong currents or rough waves might suggest musculature, but the following examples clearly use sinewy where sinuous would be more apt: The outboard motor gurgled and rumbled as they worked their way out of the sinewy river mouth, curving left, passing jutting boulders as they moved toward the  open water of Big Bay de Noc. Next time you enjoy a float down the sinewy channels of the Winooski or Lamoille river, note where each bend and twist occurs. In this area, the sinewy Delaware River takes some of its most interesting bends as it proceeds on its journey south to the Atlantic Ocean. Interesting things happen at the juncture of different mediums: between field and water, the shape of a river, its sinewy curve, is defined. The Little Manatee River still follows the same winding, sinewy course it has for centuries. The mouth of the Sibun is dominated by mangroves and a winding, sinewy track. I suppose that speakers who associate the word sinew with the image of cord-like tendons in a pattern resembling a collection of veins might describe a delta as â€Å"sinewy,† but I suspect theyre in a minority. I rather think that a more usual reason writers describe a curving river as sinewy is that they are mixing the word up with sinuous. sinewy: muscular sinuous: curving and twisting Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Overview of Partial Classes in Visual Basic .NET

Overview of Partial Classes in Visual Basic .NET Partial Classes are a feature of VB.NET that is used almost everywhere, but theres not much written about it. This might be because there are not a lot of obvious developer applications for it yet. The primary use is in the way ASP.NET and VB.NET solutions are created in Visual Studio where its one of those features that is normally hidden. A partial class is simply a class definition that is split into more than one physical file. Partial classes dont make a difference to the compiler because all the files that make up a class are simply merged into a single entity for the compiler. Since the classes are just merged together and compiled, you cant mix languages. That is, you cant have one partial class in C# and another in VB. You cant span assemblies with partial classes either. They all have to be in the same assembly. This is used a lot by Visual Studio itself, especially in web pages where it is a key concept in code behind files. Well see how this works in a Visual Studio, but understanding what changed in Visual Studio 2005 when it was introduced is a good starting point. In Visual Studio 2003, the hidden code for a Windows application was all in a section called a Region marked Windows Form Designer generated code. But it was still all there in the same file and it was easy to view, and change, the code in the Region. All of the code is available to your application in .NET. But since some of it is code that you should almost never mess with, it was kept in that hidden Region. (Regions can still be used for your own code, but Visual Studio doesnt use them anymore.) In Visual Studio 2005 (Framework 2.0), Microsoft did approximately the same thing, but they hid the code in a different place: a partial class in a separate file. You can see this at the bottom of the illustration below: Click Here to display the illustrationClick the Back button on your browser to return One of the syntax differences between Visual Basic and C# right now is that C# requires that all partial classes be qualified with the keyword Partial but VB does not. Your main form in VB.NET doesnt have any special qualifiers. But the default class statement for an empty Windows application looks like this using C#: public partial class Form1 : Form Microsofts design choices on things like this are interesting. When Paul Vick, Microsofts VB designer, wrote about this design choice in his blog Panopticon Central, the debate about it in the comments went on for pages and pages. Lets see how all this works with real code on the next page. On the previous page, the concept of partial classes was explained. We convert a single class into two partial classes on this page. Heres an example class with one method and one property in a VB.NET project Public Class CombinedClass   Ã‚  Ã‚  Private m_Property1 As String   Ã‚  Ã‚  Public Sub New(ByVal Value As String)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  m_Property1 Value   Ã‚  Ã‚  End Sub   Ã‚  Ã‚  Public Sub Method1()   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  MessageBox.Show(m_Property1)   Ã‚  Ã‚  End Sub   Ã‚  Ã‚  Property Property1() As String   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Get   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Return m_Property1   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  End Get   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Set(ByVal value As String)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  m_Property1 value   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  End Set   Ã‚  Ã‚  End Property End Class This class can be called (for example, in the Click event code for a Button object) with the code: Dim ClassInstance As New _   Ã‚  Ã‚  CombinedClass(About Visual Basic Partial Classes) ClassInstance.Method1() We can separate the properties and methods of the class into different physical files by adding two new class files to the project. Name the first physical file Partial.methods.vb and name the second one Partial.properties.vb. The physical file names have to be different but the partial class names will be the same so Visual Basic can merge them when the code is compiled. Its not a syntax requirement, but most programmers are following the example in Visual Studio of using dotted names for these classes. For example, Visual Studio uses the default name Form1.Designer.vb for the partial class for a Windows form. Remember to add the Partial keyword for each class and change the internal class name (not the file name) to the same name. I used the internal class name: PartialClass. The illustration below shows all of the code for the example and the code in action. Click Here to display the illustrationClick the Back button on your browser to return Visual Studio hides partial classes such as Form1.Designer.vb. On the next page, we learn how to do that with the partial classes we just created. The previous pages explain the concept of partial classes and show how to code them. But Microsoft uses one more trick with the partial classes generated by Visual Studio. One of the reasons for using them is to separate application logic from UI (user interface) code. In a large project, these two types of code might even be created by different teams. If theyre in different files, they can be created and updated with a lot more flexibility. But Microsoft goes one more step and hides the partial code in Solution Explorer as well. Suppose we wanted to hide the methods and properties partial classes in this project? Theres a way, but its not obvious and Microsoft doesnt tell you how. One of the reasons you dont see the use of partial classes recommended by Microsoft is that its not really supported very well in Visual Studio yet. To hide the Partial.methods.vb and Partial.properties.vb classes that we just created, for example, requires a change in the vbproj file. This is an XML file that isnt even displayed in Solution Explorer. You can find it with Windows Explorer along with your other files. A vbproj file is shown in the illustration below. Click Here to display the illustrationClick the Back button on your browser to return The way were going to do this is to add a root class that is completely empty (only the Class header and End Class statement are left) and make both of our partial classes dependent on it. So add another class named PartialClassRoot.vb and again change the internal name to PartialClass to match the first two. This time, I have not used the Partial keyword just to match the way Visual Studio does it. Heres where a little knowledge of XML will come in very handy. Since this file will have to be updated manually, you have to get the XML syntax right. You can edit the file in any ASCII text editor - Notepad works just fine - or in an XML editor. It turns out that you have a great one in Visual Studio and thats what is shown in the illustration below. But you cant edit the vbproj file at the same time that youre editing the project its in. So close the project and open only the vbproj file. You should see the file displayed in the edit window as shown in the illustration below. (Note the Compile elements for each class. DependentUpon sub-elements must be added exactly as shown in the illustration below. This illustration was created in VB 2005 but it has been tested in VB 2008 as well.) Click Here to display the illustrationClick the Back button on your browser to return For many of us, its probably enough to know that partial classes are there, just so we know what they are when were trying to track down a bug in the future. For large and complex systems development, they could be a small miracle because they can help organize code in ways that would have been impossible before. (You can also have partial structures and partial interfaces!) But some people have concluded that Microsoft invented them just for internal reasons - to make their code generation work better. Author Paul Kimmel even went so far as to suggest that Microsoft actually created partial classes to lower their costs by making it easier to outsource development work around the world. Maybe. Its the kind of thing they might do.

Country Differences in Accounting Standards Essay

Country Differences in Accounting Standards - Essay Example The United States of America perform its accounting and the respective financial statements utilizing the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). In the United Kingdom a different set of financial standards is being utilized called the financial reporting international standards. The platform utilized in Europe is an international project to standardize the financial reporting standards of corporation across the world. In Europe any company selling its stocks in any registered stock exchange such as the London Stock Exchange (LSE) must release financial standards prepared following the international reporting financial standards. Canada is a nation that is evaluating a transition from Canadian GAAP to IFRS. The new international financial reporting standards are geared towards providing a simple system with flexibility to personalize the system since it is not a rigorous as GAAP. Simplicity allows corporations to achieve savings in their administrative function. There are differences and similarities in the way a company using generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards are prepared. The GAAP required the financial statements to follow an exact format which the company can not deviate from, while the IFRS has multiple formats. The valuation of investments is performed in GAAP at the cost of the investment and earnings or losses are registered once the investment is sold. In the IFRS the value of the investment goes at fair market value. The investment segment of a GAAP prepared statement is very detailed and illustrates the value of each individual investment. In the international financial reporting standards investment are included at the discretion of the accountants responsible for preparing the financial statements. The consolidated financial statements of GAAP financial statements include subsidiary information only

Code-switching and Youth Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Code-switching and Youth Culture - Essay Example He uses different illustrations such as his mother language abilities to prove the power associated with language (350). In his book, he gives a clear illustration on the various language formats in the diverse regions of New Jersey with great achievement in his endeavors since he grew up in the area. This includes divisions on geography, ethnicity and the ultimate social status with the direct implication to the people. Code switching is a linguistics expression that implies on the switching of two or more languages. The different varieties are applied in the same single conversation by multilingual speakers. The latter refers to the people with the capability to commune in more than one particular language. This explains the need for code switching from the perspective of synchronizing with different kinds of language speakers in a particular social facet. This phenomenon is widely influenced by dialectic, ascetic, choice and Paralinguistic factors in any conversation. In the event of certain situations and topics are well suited in one language over another. In a bid to understand the mechanics behind code switching, we should appreciate the fact that language syntaxes will always align in a sentence structure for the latter to occur (351). This explains why it is very difficult for one to switch into French from a language like English especially before a noun or after an adjective. This is because French adjectives will always come prior to nouns. On the other hand, Chang Rae Lee explains about†¦in his book native speaker. Code switching had been an influential aspect I his linguistic development in America having been of Korean background. At times, unrelated languages will always syntactically align at relative clause boundaries. This has influenced the notion behind differentiating between code switching and borrowing or loaning of words. Borrowing involves lexicons while code switching is largely developed at utterance construction levels or synta x levels. In determining morphological and syntactic factors in any language alterations, there are grammatical rule from linguistics that involve syntactic boundaries in code switching occurrences. This phenomenon has not yet received universal acceptance though there exists some constraints on the same. For instance, code switching can never occur between bound morphemes in the free morpheme constraint. With reference to Tony Early, code switching is a fundamental aspect in the communication among different ethnic societies. He gives an example of the Anglo-Irish adjective;’ quare’, which is derived from the nineteenth century. The code switched adjective implies on something eccentric, strange or queer. As a result, we are able to understand Tony Early from a different perspective with reference to his Texas background. Nonetheless, he is considered a Carolinian native resulting to code switching between the languages. Apparently, the latter kinds of people do incor porate aspects of multiple languages in the event of their communication with other people (356). Using his argument, code switching can be identified as the phenomenon behind the consistent phonology and syntax on different language varieties. Borrowing is a very different phenomenon when compared to code switching because it involves an alteration on the lexicons in a language unlike code switching, which literally bases on independent but single utterances. Pidgin, on the other hand, involves

4 Actual Concepts In American Society Essay Example for Free

4 Actual Concepts In American Society Essay Explain at least 4 actual concepts that you see in our American Society today that were mentioned in 1984.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Orwell’s groundbreaking dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, may or may not have been composed as a futuristic novel, portending political and sociological phenomena. Whether or not Orwell intended his novel to predict future trends or simply illuminate existing realities, a number of the political concepts portrayed in the novel have real-life connotations even in a democratic society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Nineteen Eighty-Four, telescreens exist in every household and also in public areas. Additionally, hidden microphones and cameras are spread out through the public and private domains to catch any potential enemies of the state. In contemporary America, video cameras have been installed in public areas: notably in inner-cities and also in the suburbs.   An article by Lynn Marotta examines the ver-increasing number of public surveillance and the seemingly public ambivalence about such tactics: What started as a simple way to monitor security around the perimeter of public places has evolved to a point where anyone can install a hidden video camera and monitor that video from anywhere in the world directly over the Internet. In addition, the integration of traffic cameras, and face recognition software give law enforcement the ability to track and identify virtually anyone without us even knowing it. See more: Beowulf essay essay   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (Marotta).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Orwell also posits the concept of â€Å"doublethink† in Nineteen Eighty-Four. â€Å"Doublethink† is the ability to hold contradictory beliefs simultaneously, to forget facts which contradict this ability. â€Å"Doublethink† is one of many examples in Nineteen Eighty-Four which demonstrate the power language has over thought and belief systems. American culture is rife with examples of â€Å"doublethink;† perhaps the most notable contemporary example is the widespread and contradictory beliefs in America’s military power, with the nation’s population able to â€Å"believe† simultaneously that America is the world’s greatest iltarty power, worthy of invading and occupying foreign countries and policing the world, and ye we are told again and again how vulnerable we are and how dangerous are our enemies: North korea, Iran, and radical Islam to name a few.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another Orwellian concept: â€Å"the Two Minute Hate† showed the enemies of the Party on a huge video screen with all manner of perversion and aggression, set to inspire terror among the population of Oceania. The American counterpart to the â€Å"two Minute Hate† can witnessed on any channel’s nightly news when individuals such as the Iranian President or the â€Å"insurgent leader† Al Sadr are shown as menacing threats to the American way of life and also as the progenitors of the Iraqi war, when it was actually the U.S. who invaded and has brought terror and ruin to the Iraqi state and population. Nineteen Eighty-Four posits language as a key aspect of thought manipulation. Nowhere is this idea more explicit than in Orwell’s concept of â€Å"newspeak.† This is language reduced to remove any sense of liberation or specificity in speech or thought. An example of newspeak at work in contemporary America is the sue of the term â€Å"collateral; damage† to describe the killing of thousands of civilians during the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 2) Oedipus was doomed from birth. Trace backe this fate of Oedipus to the origin of the tragedy and arrive at the ulimate end to the family tragedy in Antigone. The fact the Oedipus was born illegitimately – that he was a bastard – forms the central theme for the ultimate tragedy in Oedipus Rex. When Oedipus begins his quest to the Oracle of English Delphi to confirm his parentage, the Oracle relates a same prophecy: that Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mother. Later, when Oedipus kills an unarmed man who demands that Oedipus give way of the road, this man is in fact King Laius, Oedipus father.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   After Oedipus dispatches the Sphinx he is given the throne of Thebes and weds Jocasta, a widow who is in fact his mother. Shortly afterward, Thebes falls into a state of pollution and degeneracy. A soothsayer tells oedipus that he is the cause of the city’s misfortunes. When oedipus finally realizes that origins of his birth: that he is the son of Laius and Jocasta, his world comes tumbling down. Jocasta, his mother and wife hangs herself in the closet, in the chamber where they had been sexually intimate. In response, Oedipus blinds himself by forcing her brooch pins into his eyes. The origin of the tragedy is in Oedipus seeking the truth of his birth; the origin of tragedy is in his illegitimacy. ((3) Macbeth was only as evil as his motivating forces. Explain fully the fate and the two most important motivating forces of Macbeth and his downfall   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The most important motivating factors for Macbeth’s downfall emerge from his will to power and his attempt to twist fate into a direction he chooses. Specifically, the will to power is embodied by his wife, lady Macbeth, and fate is embodied by the three witches who prophesied both his rise and fall to and from the throne.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   With his wife’s intrigue and cajoling, as well as the prophecy of the three witches, Macbeth believes himself fated to occupy the throne of Scotland. However, in order to embrace what he believes is his good-fate, Macbeth must commit murder.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When Lady Macbeth approaches Macbeth with her intent to kill King Duncan, Macbeth displays some trepidation about doing so; however his wife’s persuasiveness enables him to go through with what he realizes is an immoral act. After the murder, when Macbeth’s conscience plagues him, Lady Macbeth enjoins him to act normally and lay his conscience aside as she has done. Macbeth’s ultimate downfall rises from his own conscience and his ambivalent embracing of his newly stolen powers as King.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As Macbeth’s sanity splinters, Lady Macbeth also begins to be haunted by her own conscience.. She hallucinates spots of blood on her hands and washes them, saying, out, out damn spot. Macbeth’s downfall is spurred by the deterioration of his wife’s sanity as it was Lady Macbeth’s hitherto resolve which empowered Macbeth to act so rashly in the first place. Macbeth’s fall is due directly to his pursuit of ambition and power, which are given birth by the witches’ prophecy and his wife’s explicit ambitions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Only at the end does Macbeth realize his true mistake as he struts and frets his hour upon the stage.† Here, he acknowledges that he has been at best an actor of fate’s script, and at worse, a mere puppet to his wife’s ambitions or a kind of â€Å"prop† for fate itself to play out a never-ending lesson of morality.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Macbeth’s true life has bene put aside to enact this ‘role† which occasioned murder and insanity an the downfall of Kings. His ambitions and the commission of murder have caught up with and surpassed his original vision of fate; now, as the play reaches its tragic conclusion, the true purpose of his ambitions and crimes are shown, not as a will to power, but as a will toward learning the lessons of ambition and crime. Rather than a King, his life and ambitions are show to be a mere pawn in fate’s endless drama.    Work Cited Marotta, Lynn Surveillance cameras and privacy concerns is the invasion of public privacy worth it?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Video Surveillance Guide, 2006.   http://www.video-surveillance-guide.com/surveillance-cameras-and-privacy.htm

Comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Kenneth Branaghs Frankenstei

Comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein Most Americans have some idea of who Frankenstein is, as a result of the many Frankenstein movies. Contrary to popular belief Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a scientist, not a monster. The "monster" is not the inarticulate, rage-driven criminal depicted in the 1994 film version of the novel. Shelley’s original Frankenstein was misrepresented by this Kenneth branagh film, most likely to send a different message to the movie audience than Shelley’s novel shows to its readers. The conflicting messages of technologies deserve being dependent on its creator (address by Shelley) and poetic justice, or triumph over evil (showed by the movie) is best represented by the scene immediately preceding Frankenstein’s monster’s death. In Shelley’s novel, the final picture of Frankenstein’s monster reveals important qualities of his inner nature; he is shown in the last moments of his life to be felling, fully conscious of his guilt, and firm in his decision to end his life. This is the conclusion of a long series of events providing insight into how the monster changed as a result of his creator’s actions and the actions of the people with whom he came in contact. Up until this final point, he has changed from being good and hopeful to being caught up in the desire for a companion, to being evil and only focused on revenge. All these changes are recounted by the monster himself in this scene. (Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine) He was at one point motivated by many good things like as virtue and honor, so much so that he wanted a companion to share in his happy life. â€Å"When I first sought it [sympathy], it was the love of virtue, the feelings of happiness and affec... ...iro portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster has created a false myth of an evil, unintelligent monster that is not at all similar to the one Shelley displays in her novel. Not only does the movie spread a false interpretation of Shelley’s work, it provides the public with no lasting message about technology or about the effects of misplaced human love. Shall we then seek revenge? Shall we destroy that what is evil? Of course not--Shelley gave us all to learn a lesson of tolerance and of correcting our mistakes. Perhaps if a more accurate film version of Frankenstein were available to the public, more people would be motivated to read the book and learn Shelley’s powerful message. Immigration

Immigration is a really big topic that is being discussed by our president and all of our citizens which people have two different views on but,I believe, immigration is a great cause for the United States. Due, to the fact that the United States was built upon immigration from many other countries. I believe that it can create a lot of good if we keep allowing immigrants to become citizens to a certain extent and we should keep it regulated. Immigration has been a part of the United States for years now. According to U.S. Immigration Before 1965 (U.S. Immigration Before 1965),more than two million immigrants have entered the United States in the years of 1880 through 1920.This helped populate the U.S during its beginning years when it was trying to expand and grow as a country. The immigrants who came from other counties in that time came to find religious freedom and find a better life for their families. Our current president wants to build a wall to keep Immigrants out of the US. he does not want immigration to be apart of the US because he believes that they would take our jobs and he believes that most of the people who come to the united states from mexico are all of the felons or people who come to the US to break the US apart and kill people when in reality they all have the same believes that the first immigrants had who came to the US they are coming to the US to start over try and provide for there families and look out for their future kids. Other people in the US believe that they will just come to the US to take our jobs and our money that we can be making when Usually they take jobs that no one would ever take here in the US they take the jobs that most people in the us think is to hard like working in the fields and in factories and other jobs. They also get paid less than minimum wage for doing jobs that people should get paid more for because they are producing our for economy by creating jobs and our produce of fruit and vegetables or anything that is made in a farm is usually grow and picked by these people who are really hard working and are just trying to make a living for there family and themselves. Another reason i believe that immigration would be great for the US is because our economy can benefit greatly if we allow immigrants to become citizens they can generate about 832 billion dollars to our economy in the next ten years which would help the us greatly the US this can help create over 203,000 jobs a year which would help the economy out a lot it would give us more jobs and it would also help the US with the economy because more money would be generated after all those jobs are created. Most immigrants have wanted to come to the US to follow their dreams and do what they can to to support their family and give them a better future in life and just most of the immigrants who came over from mexico are coming from a place where the drug cartel is reigning over there city or state and they are trying to get away from the bad that comes along with it they are trying to stop there kids from getting kidnaped and sold for money those people who are trying to get away from that believe that the US can provide that for them and they believe that they can provide something for the economy too. I am a first generation and have watched my family struggle through all the hardship that they have come across due to the fact that they never had any help from the government when all they are trying to do is help the american government and provide for their kids. In the US there are so many people who are for the legalization of immigration. â€Å"80% of americans surveyed said that they support the pathway to citizenship†(Most Americans support the path to citizenship for illegal immigration) this shows that most people would allow immigrants to become citizens. If 80 % of the people are for it then why does the US not allow them to become citizens. â€Å"72% of these who backed president Trump also support the issue† (Most Americans support the path to citizenship for illegal immigration) Its know that president trump doesn't want to allow immigrants to become citizens but most of his voters have spoken up saying they have no problem with it at all and would allow them to become citizens. Its scary to see that there is a lot of criminals and violence in this world and you as an american would not want that for your country. Yes, the mexican drug cartel has spilled over the us border according to the article (illegal Alien criminals should be removed from the country) and it is scary but not all mexican people are drug dealers or people from the cartel. â€Å"They are families and workers, taking the jobs nobody else wants, staying out of trouble,†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (the realities about illegal immigrants in the united states) Most of the immigrants who came to the us came to help support their family in hopes to find a job to help get out of all the dangers in mexico. They left everything behind to risk it all for the american dream to have a good family and have enough money to better there kids futers and get them ready for life. I believe that if we still allow immigration to the United states it can benefit the US a lot im not saying fully legalized but if we monitor it a lot more and and only let a select few people migrate over to the US we wouldn't have to deal with some of the downfalls of the immigration like tax increasing and other things like crime rate going up in the united states because there are some people who are criminals but most of the people who come to the us don't come here for that reason they come to help there family witch i really emphasis because not all immigrants are bad.

Managing Capability

Outline the patterns of Amazon’s strategic evolution. Discuss Jeff Bezos’s role in this. Amazon. com is probably one of the most well-known on-line marketing hub nowadays. The primary strategy of the said online store is being directly connected with its customer. Since people who are using the internet are increasing, it is not hard to believe that Amazon. com found its niche in allowing online users to purchase products and services through their website. Amazon. com is also considered to be the starters in the utilization of Internet as a channel of business endeavors.Amazon. com was founded by its Chief Executive Officer named Jeff Bezos in the year 1994 (Barros et. al. 1). Bezos wants to open a store which is not akin to traditional retail stores. Basically, the good choice of purchasing platform is the Internet wherein many people are using. In Amazon. Com, the selling of books was being developed because of the unlimited amount of book titles and it is easy to de velop search methods and retrieval functions and systems. There are various advantages of an online store just like Amazon. com. These advantages include direct customer advantages and cost advantages. For direct customer advantages, there are many factors which contributed to the strategic evolution of Amazon. com. First, the business of Amazon is available for about twenty four hours paer day and seven days a week. This makes the online selling convenient for purchasers or buyers and advantageous for the company itself. Using Proper English Pronunciation In The Theatre

Using Proper English Pronunciation In The Theatre Free Online Research Papers The stylistic effects of the divided lexicon in English are often used in literature in order to express ideas in unique way, to shape a character or to attract the reader’s attention to a certain part of the text. These effects became to possible due to the consequences of the Inkhorn movement during the Renaissance. The supporters of the Inkhorn movement believed that English language should be Latinized. As a consequence, many Latinized words entered the English vocabulary, but the Anglo-Saxon words also stayed within it. The difference between Anglo-Sacson words which are considered to be low (L) and Latinized words which are considered to be high (H) created two patterns in English. In spite of the efforts of the Latinization supporters (L) stayed to be the â€Å"natural† language of native speakers when (H) is used mainly on special occasions (Adamson 1989, p. 208). (L) is usually acquired by children as a first language, therefore the native speakers have more associations with it and they feel closer to it. When someone wants to ask his friend about his life he would say â€Å"How are you doing?† because the saying of â€Å"What is your emotional state?† would sound too official to the situation and even funny. (L) is the language of ordinary social conversations. Unlike (L), the (H) language is acquired in older age in schools and colleges, so it has less emotional charge attached to it. (H) is used mostly in literature, writing, official conversations and ceremonies (Adamson 1989, p. 206). The differences between (H) and (L) make it seem like they can be used only in entirely separate situations, but in fact, the combination of them can be very effective tool that is frequently used in literature. One of the effects that is made possible by using both is self-glossing – saying something, and then explaining it in different words to clarify the meaning. Sylvia Adamson (1989, p. 217) gives the next example to this effect: â€Å"Claribel, you’re incredible! Do you know what that means? It means you’re a very naughty dolly.† (Elizabeth W., aged 6) In this Example we can see how the clarity of the (H) word is achieved by explaining it in (L) words. Another effect that can be achieved by the combination of (L) and (H) is the comic effect. The use of (H) in situations where is usually used (L) and vice versa in most cases is unsuitable. For example the saying of a mother to her five year old child â€Å"approach towards me† instead of â€Å"come here† would seem to be inappropriate and comical. In many cases in literature the narrator feels the need to show a certain situation in positive or negative light. The mixing of (H) and (L) is also makes it possible as seen in the next example: Cassio: She’s a most exquisite lady Iago: And, I’ll warrant her, full of game†¦ (Othello 113-4) In this case Cassio describes the lady in (H) words, but Iago makes it lower and more vulgar by using (L) an it creates a negative view of her (Adamson 1989, p. 218). More examples for the effectiveness of the combined use of (L) and (H) can be seen in chapter 32 of George Eliot’s novel Middlemarch, characterizes Mr. Borthrop Trumbull in terms of : â€Å" He was an amateur of superior phrases, and never used poor language without immediately correcting himself†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . In this statement, we can see the sarcastic attitude of the narrator to this character. She describes him as one who shifts in his speech from (L) to (H), and in the narrator’s description of him we can se an echo of Mr. Trumbull’s speech manner. The description combines within it low words like â€Å"poor† and â€Å"never† together with high words like â€Å"amateur† or â€Å"superior†. It seems like the narrator makes fun of Mr. Trumbull by repeating his speech style and it shows that the narrator’s attitude to this character is not very respectful. The narrator’s description of Mr. Trumbull’s speech is proved to be truth further in the text. When (L) word like â€Å"ask† accidentally slips from his mouth, he immediately fixes it to â€Å"interrogate†. He is so obsessed by the â€Å"superior phrases† that he tries to make (H) phrase even higher than it is. For example when Mr. Trumbull says â€Å"..anybody may ask†, he immediately corrects himself by saying â€Å"Anybody may interrogate†, but this isn’t enough for him and he paraphrases the sentence again to â€Å"Any one may give their remarks an interrogative turn†. This obsession of his turns him to a comic character who is found in a constant run after a perfect language. He uses the self-glossing but in fact he glosses from (L) to (H) and saying the same things over and over again without a certain purpose. He tries to show himself as an educated person by using (H) but his repetitions are achieving the opposite, ironic effect and he looks funny and foolish . By using only superior language in his speech, Mr. Trumbull hopes to show himself as a scholarly person but we constantly see his slips to a low language that indicate that he is not really the man who he is trying to be. Another comic feature in Mr. Trumbull’s character is his use of high language in a simple conversation. The chat between him and Miss Garth is supposed to be a friendly talk, but he makes an effort to use high phrases like: â€Å"I think – he will not, in my opinion, be speedily surpassed†. This phrase is more appropriate to a lecture in university than to this situation and his inappropriate use of (H) make him seem amusing. From these examples taken from Middlemarch we can see how the narrator in the story shapes Mr. Borthrop Trumbull’s character trough his use of language in his speech. The combinations of high and low language and the shifting between the two styles from (L) to (H) give the writer the possibility to create a comic, character and to express her attitude to Mr. Trumbull. The ability to play with high and low styles in English language give the writers a powerful tool that allows them to shape their work on their own, unique way by showing the reader an unexpected side of a text, and creating comic situations in it. How to Write Compelling Dialogue

How to Write Compelling Dialogue Skillfully used, dialogue can pull a reader into a book and mesmerize that person. It also provides easy reading and quickly moves the reader along as opposed to pages upon pages of descriptive wordings and phrases. Nobody has to learn about speech, it’s an integral part of our society. We engage in dialogue everyday whether it’s with another individual, over the phone, to our pets or even to ourselves. Dialogue is the most natural way society has of conveying information to one another. There is a trick however, to creating natural sounding dialogue in a book. When you listen to people talk, their sentences are fragmented, disjointed and typically peppered with slang, cuss words and fillers such as â€Å"uh, well, like, um†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Their facial and body expressions fill in the rest. It wouldn’t make much sense if you were to write dialogue exactly as you hear it. When writing dialogue, one must be able to convey conversation between characters in a natural , skillful way that doesn’t seem contrived. An adroit writer will use dialogue to convey the history, personality or description of a character, to create a mood or setting. Instead of droning on and on in a paragraph describing the setting, how a person looks or the mood and risk putting your reader to sleep, use dialogue to convey that information. Show the personality of your character by the way you have them speak. If you’re portraying a gangster then pepper their dialogue with slang and name calling. Convey the fact that they’re in a gang by making references to it in conversation. Portray a professional, perhaps a lawyer, by having him speak in a very eloquent manner using intellectual words. There would be no need to describe that he was a highly intelligent man who spoke well or even dressed well. Those can be shown through dialogue. You can even adopt a masculine or feminine way of speech to fit the gender of your character. What you want to do is create a picture of that character in the reader’s mind. Show the reader with your words and allow the reader to develop the picture in their minds. Make references to the past in conversations. This gives the readers an insight into what drives the character in the story. Create pictures for them using dialogue. Make it so that the reader can read and say â€Å"Aha, so that’s where he got his murderous tendencies†, after reading a dialogue showing how his father beat him senseless as a boy. Set the mood by using dialogue. Show the reader what a romantic night your characters are experiencing by having them reference the setting in their conversation. Instead of saying she got the matches out and lit the candles on the table. Use dialogue, such as â€Å"Hey babe, would you light the candles for me?† Using dialogue to show candles on a table is much more interesting than describing the action of getting the matches and lighting them. Describe someone by having two characters talk about them rather than going into an actual play by play of a physical description. For instance, if a woman had spiky red hair, you could show two other people commenting on how she must have spent a fortune getting her hair cut and dyed. Plus the fact that now she’s going to have to spend extra time every morning gelling and shaping her hair into spikes. Properly used in dialogue the reader can get a sense of resentment from the two who are having the conversation about the woman. Remember to read the dialogue out loud to yourself so you can get a sense of how it sounds to your ears. If it doesn’t flow or sound natural, then the reader isn’t going to identify with it. This is an extremely important part in creating compelling dialogue; getting the conversation to sound as if it could actually be taking place. If you find yourself hitting an awkward spot in the dialogue, then your readers most likely will too. Don’t get too carried away with dialects and slang. If it gets too complicated to read and follow, the reader most likely will put your book down. Another important thing to remember is not to get too carried away with the length of their responses. Most people speak in shorter spurts back and forth. The only time you’ll find someone going on and on would most likely be someone giving a speech or telling a story. Use dialogue to convey emotion. A simple one word response such as a curt â€Å"No† can indicate someone†™s impatience with another. Don’t insult a reader’s intelligence by telling him exactly how everything looked, felt or was. Readers have vivid imaginations and a big part of the lure of reading is to be able to figure out and visualize the spoken words into the bigger picture of the story.

Developing a Joint Globally Accepted Conceptual Framework Essay - 1

Developing a Joint Globally Accepted Conceptual Framework - Essay Example This essay stresses that the advantage with IASB conceptual framework is that of having a wider and broader purpose as opposed to the FASB framework. IASB places more emphasis on other purposes which include use of statements of finance and helping auditors while FASB theoretical framework seeks to place very little emphasis on these other purposes. This puts IASB framework in a much higher level in the GAAP order than the FASB framework’s GAAP hierarchy of the United States, also the status framework will reflect the difference in purpose. IASB framework is highly considered by those units that prepare statements of finance under IFRS where a specific standard is not applicable. This paper makes a conclusion that the FASB Statements of Concepts are ranked below articles, textbooks on accounting and handbooks under the United States GAAP. The FASB Concepts Statements are ranked no higher than accounting textbooks, handbooks, and articles, and below widely recognized and prevalent general or industry practices. Recent changes in U.S. law and regulation have removed responsibility for establishing the U.S. GAAP. FASB structure includes gains, losses, expenses, revenue and comprehensive income as the elements relating to financial performance while IASB has expenses ad income as its only elements. IASB defines an asset as a resource for drawing future economic benefits while FASB framework terms assets themselves as the economic benefits of the future a thing that puts IASB ahead of FASB.

FAMILY LAW Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 2

FAMILY LAW - Essay Example The main setback identified in this area is due to the fact that the national criminal justice system does not consider domestic abuse or violence as criminal activities, and fails to provide adequate protection for women against such offences1. To compound the misery, there is considerable bureaucratic apathy among the enforcement authorities, such as the police, prosecutors and judges. These persons have been found to be unwilling to identify the causes of domestic violence. Therefore, the enforcement of laws against domestic violence has not been effective or constructive. Most law enforcing authorities do not view domestic violence as a serious criminal issue, and consider it to be a private problem. Their belief is that women have to deal with the problem of domestic violence and arrive at a solution to it by themselves. Most women believe that the criminal justice system acts as a barrier to their seeking the court’s intervention to eliminate violence. Several international bodies claimed that domestic violence is a violation of human rights. They also demanded that human rights must be made applicable to domestic violence. Human rights treaties have to develop effective instruments to address the problem of do mestic violence2. Activities such as physically hitting or slapping or a threat to cause harm to the victim or child of the victim, threatening to commit suicide or demeaning the victim verbally or physically, restricting the victim in visiting his or her friends or family member would constitute crimes of domestic violence3. Domestic violence is distinct from other types of assault. It should be dealt with separately with a separate dedicated mechanism for handling of cases; and there should be high levels of prosecutions and punishments. Only then will it be possible to eliminate domestic violence from the lives of women. The effects of domestic violence are much higher than that of physical assaults. Psychological damage is a very common

Financial analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Financial analysis - Essay Example Its Critical success factors are looked upon along with the strategies that it has followed over the years to maintain its Market Share in such a competitive industry. Background â€Å"Airbus SAS is an aircraft manufacturing subsidiary of EADS, a European aerospace company. Based in Toulouse, France, and with significant activity across Europe, the company produces around half of the world's jet airliners. Some figures about Airbus are that is it’s a global company having 9 engineering design centers, 15 manufacturing sites, 20 languages, 24 hour customer support (365 days a year), 50 flight simulators, 88 nationalities and more than 5,300 aircraft delivered† (Linkedin, Airbus). American airline manufactures were the first ones to produce aircrafts in bulk quantity hence a competitor was required in Europe. As a response, three of the major European countries; France, United Kingdom and Germany joined together and built up the Airbus Industry. This was a government init iative of the above three countries to built up an organization that can give a proper competition to the American Airline Manufacturers such as Boeing, Lockheed, etc. Airbus came up with A300 as their first product; it was later modified to increase passenger capacity to more than 300 passengers and was known as A380. It was clearly evident that it was collaboration of three countries working together. Airbus’s engines were to be manufactured by Rolls Royce. Initially the company had to bear high development costs as their engines were produced by Rolls Royce. The engine designed by Rolls Royce was also facing major difficulties and delays. Gradually, the company has increased its competition by creating modern aircrafts which are dominating the market (Davies, 2001; Airbus - Gathering Clouds, 2008). The Airbus jetliner products line consists of 14 different aircraft models. All these models are diversified with respect to size, specification and capacity (Airbus.com). Revie w of Management Accounting According to CIMA, Management accounting â€Å"is the practical science of value creation within organizations in both the private and public sectors. Management accountants operate in financial and non-financial roles throughout organizations and carry out all their training and experience requirements within business itself, providing them with a unique insight into how their organizations operate.† (CIMA Official Website) Management accounting, hence, plays a vital role in the success of any organization. It helps in giving an insight to the managers about the problem areas, risk factors and performance determinants which can be controlled by managerial decisions and processes. Critical Success Factor - Airbus Critical Success Factors in an airline manufacturing industry are the passenger capacity that the company has to offer, i ts performance, the organization’s reputation, etc. Airbus has been a leader in civil aircraft manufacturing for a decade or so in Europe and globally too it is recognized as a market leader along with Boeing, Lockheed, etc. All this is because Airbus has been very good when it comes to

Raymond Carvers Short Stories Mine Little Things

Raymond Carvers Short Stories Mine Little Things Analysis of Raymond Carvers Short Stories Mine Little Things The word genre is derived from the French word kind or class. Genre is a term which is used to identify a form of literature. It is widely used in rhetoric, literary theory, media theory and linguistics (Chandler). It is an elaborative classing system. There are different kinds of Genre but the one used in this story is a narrative short story (Genre Types). Essay is a short piece of writing, a literary device for saying almost everything. It can be literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, etc. This short story can be categorized as a dialogue essay. Critical Analysis Both the stories narrate the incidence of a fight between a husband and a wife. The reason for the discontentment is not mentioned in the story but it clearly describes the argumentative dialogues of the husband and the wife (Chandler). The arguments take hype when both start fighting for the possession of their little baby. The story starts with an angry quarrel as the man prepares to walk out of his house leaving his wife and trying to snatch his baby from the wife. Their hatred for each other demonstrates itself as a physical struggle over their baby, with each parent pulling on an arm until the baby is seriously injured (Chandler). The story Little Things is more descriptive and describes the situation more clearly. The story Mine leaves on the reader to decide certain things i.e. the reader has to make guesses after reading the story and arrive on conclusions. The second story, appealed me the most as it describes the situation in the story in a much better way and helps the reader to understand it very clearly (McDermott). The version Little Things is better than the version Mine because it is more elaborative and descriptive. It describes the emotions of the husband, wife and the baby more deeply than the version Mine. This version clearly describes the happenings in the story and the conversations between the husband the wife (McDermott). There are a few word alterations, omissions and paragraphing changes in the version Little Things, but the focus is on the beginning and ending paragraphs where the most important changes occur, which strengthen the story. It explains the emotional attachment of the parents with the baby and their fight because of this emotional relationship (McDermott). The Readers response theory can be applied for the version Mine, in which the reader has to find out the conclusion and analyze the situation, thus it requires more constructive participation form the reader. But it does not describe the situation clearly, which is a big shortcoming of this version (McDermott). The version Mine focuses on the sun and the revised version on weather, which is much broader and enables the reader to make more affiliations. It arouses the humanistic element by evoking expressions such as under the weather or heavy weather that are used to describe health in emotional agitation (McDermott) The omission of whose chubby face gazed up at them from the picture on the table is a vast improvement, as shifting the emphasis from the baby to the picture of the baby was a great mistake in the version Mine. The scuffle is over the baby and not on the picture; the shift causes a loss of momentum. In the last sentence also, shifting to passive expression strengthens the meaning (McDermott). This is a subtle change, but modifying they decide the issue to the issue was decided shows the lack of control the parents have, as they are not deciding anything. Thesis statement Based on the above discussion, following thesis can be stated: The two short stories entitled Mine and Little Things written by Raymond Carver consist of narrative genre and can be termed as Dialogue essays. The version Little Things is more appealing than the version Mine (McDermott). The two versions of the same story entitled Mine Little Things describe the situations prevailing between the husband and the wife, while they are having a feud for the possession of the baby. The version Little Things is considered to be more impressive as it is more elaborative and descriptive and describes the whole situation more clearly. It gives a better understanding of the story to the reader. It shows a clear picture of the emotions of both the husband and the wife for their baby (McDermott). Mine reflects the dramatic action of the story. This title is so explicit in representing the action, as the parents fight for the baby reminds of how children fight for their possession. On the other hand, the title Little Things is a commentary on the character of the parents for putting such selfish needs (wining possession) ahead of the babys welfare. Thus, Little Things is an improved version of Mine (Chandler). Work Cited Genre Types. 2007. http://www.falmouth.k12.ma.us/uploads/File/balancedliteracy/Genre%20Types.doc Chandler, Daniel. 2002. The Indignity of the Church :: Essays Papers

The Indignity of the Church In the article â€Å"The Priest Scandal†, by Carol Cannon expresses her views in the American Journalism Review regarding the scandals within the Catholic Church. She continues to explain how the Catholic Church has been trying to keep the whole issue hidden from society. Carol Cannon makes a point how the media has struggled with pursuing this issue for many years, while America wasn’t ready to hear the truth on such a controversial topic. Carol Cannon is writing to many different groups. Catholics are probably going to be the most interested, but since this issue is so huge it affects many different audiences and ages. Cannon’s article on sexual child abuse by priests, is written through the use of logic, credibility and emotions. She displays a clear topic and supports with using reason along with values and beliefs. The claims that Cannon makes are logical because many priests have come forwards or been charged with child molestation. Cannon makes logical claims by issuing persuasive arguments on the issue that child molestation by priests has been covered up for years. She has been reporting on the issue of pedophilia by Church officials for more than 13 years. Cannon uses evidence to support her claim. She has a combination of evidence, some which of were interviews of children who were sexual molested by priests. Cannon, along with others has also been granted permission to explore archives where the priest’s cases have been taken to court. Cannon’s examples are convincing through her arguments. She also has credible sources of other journalists that wrote on the same topic as she did. Cannons argument appeal to everyday common sense because the issue has become such a big deal to Americans. The media has also played a large part in the growth of this topic. When reporters were told to pick another topic the news media didn’t listen and were heard. Since the issue of child molestation has been around for awhile, the public knows of the issue and has a stance on it. The structure of the article has much to do on the argument of the topic. The author starts out with her credibility and then a short narrative which is an attention getter.
